IN MY LIFE…

SHE WRITES: Last night I had a date with my mom and dad We watched a Star Cinema movie entitled IN MY LIFE which stars the Star For All Seasons Ms. Vilma Santos, her son Luis Manzano and a versatile actor John Lloyd Cruz and is directed by Olivia Lamasan, who also directed the  movies Got 2 Believe in Magic and Milan. You may watch the full trailer of this abs-cbn movie IN MY LIFE here. Among the characters, it was Shirley who made me laugh and cry as I can see in her my mother and myself (as a mother too). There was a part in the movie where Ms. Vilma Santos, Shirley, told about how there were times she wanted to give up but she didn’t because she had to be strong for her children. There I saw my mom… I believe many times in the past there were days she was just … Continue reading

First Timer’s Luck?

SHE WRITES: Almost a month ago the Negros Bloggers had our first blogger’s meet up at the Bacolod Casino Filipino  with Janette Toral as our speaker. It was a night of food, fun and friendship. It was also my first time to get inside the casino. Yes, at my age, it was my first time! All the participants were given the P300 double the money certificate and I was one of the lucky ones who got the P500 1st bet certificate during the raffle. Using those 2 certificates from PAGCOR, my friends and I decided to go inside and place bets, anyway we didn’t need to put in cash. So we went inside and tried our “luck”.  To my amazement, I WON!!! I went home bringing with me P2,000 cash!!! I was sooooo happy! A lot of my friends commented that it was a ” First Timer’s Luck.” It was the first time I … Continue reading

ACTIONS OR WORDS?

SHE WRITES: There’s a saying that goes, UNEXPRESSED GRATITUDE IS INGRATITUDE. It doesn’t say though if it has to be verbalized because there are people who are not expressive in their words, but they claim they express gratitude through their actions. However, actions without words may easily be misinterpreted. Same goes with all words and no actions, the recipient of our words may doubt what we’re saying.  So when it comes to expressing, I think it should be both actions + words. I am both – I say it out loud when I’m grateful and I also see to it that actions like hugs or kisses go with my words. My husband is most of the time the action only type. After 5 years of marriage, I finally heard him say (with 2 witnesses) when we were in China that I am not just his better half, I am his perfect half – the perfect fit for him. … Continue reading

IS CRYING A SIGN OF WEAKNESS?

SHE WRITES: I don’t know if you’re familiar with the song Boys Don’t Cry, but I am. Growing up I always wondered why it’s such a big deal for boys (big ones because little boys DO cry if they need to) admitting that they cried over something or someone. What’s more surprising though is that some people (including women) find it a sign of weakness when they cry.  But not for me… Personally, I think crying is my way of unloading my burdens and after that, there’s a certain relief and I DO feel better. I can say I’m stronger after hundreds or thousands of tears had been released. Well, aside from the fact that I consider myself a cry baby, crying is really an outlet for me when I’m hurt or when I’m down. I cry if I need to or if I want to. However, I always choose to dry my tears, get on with life and … Continue reading

KNOW SOMEONE WITH IMPERFORATE ANUS?

SHE WRITES:   It’s been almost 4 months since my last post so allow me to give you an update… I already gave birth to a very pretty baby girl and we call her “Meimei” which mean little sister in Chinese. Everything is well except that she has imperforate anus. As wikipedia puts it: “An imperforate anus or anal atresia is a birth defect in which the rectum is malformed. Its cause is unknown.” Right now Meimei has colostomy – considered as the first operation. The second operation that will take place sometime in October will be for the “making” of the rectum and the third operation will be the closure of the colostomy after about another 4-6 months. For the duration of about 1 year and 6 months, we (EJ, Meimei and I) will stay here in the Philippines while my husband stays in China (but he’ll be … Continue reading

ARE YOU AN INITIATOR?

SHE WRITES:Hi friends in the blogging world… I miss blogging and reading what you have to share… I’m sorry I haven’t been visible for a while and that’s because I’m starting up a project and the fact that I’m on my 6th month in my pregnancy, I have to make sure everything should be running this month so that next month, I can dedicate my time preparing for my coming baby. I’m very much excited because as an influencer (my personality type), initiating things or starting up is really one thing I love doing. I am in the Philippines right now with my son while my husband went back to China last February 2. Initiating this project allows me to not focus too much on being lonely – which is all the more why I’m keeping myself really busy. My son is doing well, I enrolled him in one of … Continue reading

GO ON OR STOP?

SHE WRITES:Last month I underwent a blood test that enabled me to find out if my soon to be born baby has the right number of chromosomes needed for a normal child. On our way home, I asked my husband why I had to go through that test. What if our child has more or less chromosomes needed, is there medical intervention to correct the case? He said NO, it’s just for us to consider if we will continue or stop the pregnancy because here in China, abortion is legal. That made me think… I don’t believe in abortion and I always believed that a fetus is already human and has the right to live. However, this event shook what I have always believed and made me wonder… What if indeed the child will turn out to have down syndrome or other abnormalities? We have a friend that has a … Continue reading

GO BACK OR STAY?

SHE WRITES:I’ve been gone for several days and haven’t really been in the loop for sometime already. That’s because my son’s cough has been on and off for almost a month, but this week, it was at its peak. I’ve tried what I know to help him cope with the coldness and dryness of winter, but I think I’ve fallen short. They say it’s normal here for his age to get sick at this time of the year but I don’t like it. It makes me worry because he has just recovered from a mild primary complex, which he developed last winter too. His lung is very fragile at this time and frequent attacks of cough and cold might do so much harm. With this, I am faced with a dilemma… If we go back to the Philippines now, EJ and his papa will have a long time of separation. … Continue reading

WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND YOUR GIFT?

SHE WRITES: We’re still in the spirit of the gift giving season so this post is about memorable gifts…either gift that you have received or you have given to someone. It could be the most expensive or the cheapest – doesn’t matter, as long as when you think of gifts, you remember that particular thing. For my case, I remember a white dress that “Santa” gave me when I was a child. That was the last Christmas I believed in Santa because my mom made a comment that revealed Santa’s identity ) I can still remember what she said… “How did you manage to get the perfect fit?” then I saw my papa’s face turned RED as he silenced my mom but saw me looking at them! hihi… He then just gave me a hug and said “Don’t tell your brothers, ok?” I agreed so the following Christmas, I went … Continue reading

HOW WILL YOU CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS?

SHE WRITES:As you know, we are here in China and this is not a Christian nation… But that won’t stop us from celebrating the season. Tonight we will have a gathering of all the Filipinos here in our place – probably just about 20 people – and we will have exchange gifts and singing since there’s a regular Filipino band in that place. Tomorrow we will have our Christmas Party here at home – 7 of us – that is with our friends whom we consider extended family. We have kris kringle and some games that I have planned out. We will just have simple food and celebration but I’m sure it’ll turn out wonderful because the bottom line is, we meet, talk and just be together. Although we miss Christmas in the Philippines, we have managed to have a “home away from home” here in China. Of course, with … Continue reading

EVER BELIEVED IN SANTA?

SHE WRITES:Waking up every December 25th was one of the most exciting days of my life when I was 9 years old and younger. I would run to my gifts and open them with big ahhhs and ooohs in disbelief that Santa passed by and gave me (and my siblings) those gifts! When I found out that Mr. Santa was mom and dad, I didn’t get disappointed but rather grateful that even if we didn’t have much money, there wasn’t a Christmas morn where we woke up with no gifts. When my siblings and I were all grown up, I asked my dad why they kept doing that “Santa” thingy even if we were hard up financially. He told me something that made it all the more special… Papa said seeing the JOY in our faces, with those wide eyes as we opened the gifts made their efforts all worth … Continue reading

HOW DO YOU HANDLE Mr. or Ms. MOODY?

SHE WRITES: Let me start by saying I am definitely not a moody person but I know someone who is and people around her are having a (bit of) hard time because she’s so unpredictable. I don’t know if it’s really true that there are days she “wakes up at the right / wrong side of the bed” because for me, the right / wrong side is up to you ) Well of course we don’t have the same personality type, but it’s kinda hard to be on your toes when you’re with that person – as what others tell me. Ooops, if you’re someone who’s been told moody, it would be good to explain what’s going on when you’re “irregular” ) And if you’ve been around one, let’s say married to Mr. or Mrs. Moody, then how have you managed to relate with him / her with less conflict? … Continue reading

HOW OFTEN DO YOU WALK IN THE PARK?

SHE WRITES:I like walking in the park, but I seldom have the chance to do it here in China. There are a lot of parks here but I have no one to walk with because my husband works whole day and it’s very cold at night, especially now it’s winter. BUT when I was in Bacolod (my hometown) my in-laws and I did it about 3-4x each week. It started in 2005 when I was 5 months pregnant with EJ – we walked almost every night – yep, after dinner. The “tradition” went on until EJ came out – that was the same park where we trained him how to walk and run ) I loved doing it with mama Mary and papa William (my in-laws) and I miss it very much. It’s actually one of the things I’m looking forward to next year because I’ll stay with them a … Continue reading

R U A WORKAHOLIC?

SHE WRITES: I know that I used to be workaholic when I was single. Used to work overtime everyday, worked until 12 midnight if there were shipments that were urgent and even 24 hours straight when something went wrong with a very important customer’s goods. However, I kinda reduced that stressful life when I got married. But when I started handmade beaded jewelry business while at work, my husband and I would stay up ’til 3am doing them and wake up at 6:30am to go to work… Did that on weekdays and just take a full day sleep on weekends. When I had my son, I decided not to work in a manufacturing environment because it demanded so much time. However, when I started teaching, I did the same thing – stayed up late to study or make my lessons. When I got hooked with Photoshop (editing pictures), I’d stay … Continue reading

WHO INFLUENCED YOU THE MOST?

SHE WRITES:I will only deal with one aspect and that is who made the greatest contribution when it comes to my self confidence – I would say my dad. I used to be very shy (people who personally know me will doubt this statement, but really, I was – shy). During parties, I would ask my dad to get my food because I was so shy to go near the table and be seen by a lot of people. However, in one of the parties we attended Papa (how I call my dad) asked me to look at everyone else from a distance and asked me what’s the difference with those people getting their food and me hiding on my seat. He asked if I had a nose, ears, eyes and etc. I said YES to all of his questions… Then he pointed out that there’s nothing to be ashamed … Continue reading

WITH OR WITHOUT SIBLINGS?

SHE WRITES:I would like to thank Ares for this topic suggestion ) As you can see, I have 5 of them – and i love having them in my life. My brothers gave me love and guidance – there are things I told my brothers and not my parents – like my first broken heart and my first boy friend. My parents were unaware but I cried with my brothers… I love my sister too. I love the fact that she sees me as her role model when it comes to almost everything. We share clothes and we sleep late just talking and talking. They’re all in the Philippines and I’m the only one away from home. I miss spending Dec. 24th with them because we have exchange gifts. So even if I’m here, we’re still included in our family Christmas party. We don’t spend new years together because 5 … Continue reading

DO YOU LIKE YOUR NAME?

SHE WRITES:Yes I do – I like all my names. My real name is Elizabeth Rose, my nickname is Maricar and my Chinese name is Meili. Different groups call me differently – my classmates call me by my real name; my family, relatives, church and workmates call me by my nickname; and in the blogging world and to some Chinese friends I use my Chinese name (because they can’t pronounce my other names). However, I have friends who literally despise the sound of their real names so they came up with another one for people around to use when referring to them and the only time they use their real names is when they need to sign legal papers or documents. I also came across this site What Not to Name Your Baby and the blogger lists down some of the unheard names – at least for me. Reading his … Continue reading

IS IT APPROPRIATE TO TALK ABOUT DEATH?

SHE WRITES: Last week, my husband and our friends got to chat about insurances. It then lead to the topic that his sister’s husband ensured himself a great amount of money to make sure incase he leaves earth someday, his wife and daughter won’t live penny less. He told that they (his sister and her hubby) have plans already – like if he dies, she’ll get the money, pay all the debt, sell their business so she and the kid can just live with the interest of the money from the bank. Our friend’s sister is a fulltime homemaker and the moment her husband goes, she will absolutely be crippled when it comes to handling the business because her hubby does everything. Another sister of his who’s actually single but earns a significant amount in an MLM has already written somewhat like a transfer of finances – distributing her income … Continue reading

DID YOU / WILL YOU MARRY YOUR BEST FRIEND?

SHE WRITES: My brother fell inlove with his best friend back when he was in his teens, but he never had the chance to tell her how he felt, up to this day. The reason? He was afraid of losing the friendship because he feared the thought: “What if she didn’t have the same feelings for me? Then I would lose her forever…” So he never tried, not then, not ever. One of my girl friends almost lost her sanity when her best friend of 10 years got married to his girlfriend of several months. She thought it wasn’t fair. Sounds like My Best Friend’s Wedding movie huh? But it’s true…However, I married my best friend. It was tough at the beginning, the transition from being best friends to lovers, but it was wonderful having to marry someone you know so well and who knows me really deep too. Our … Continue reading

DO YOU LIKE WINTER?

SHE WRITES: I’ll go straight to the point, I dread winter =( It’s too cold for me. Taking a bath / shower is a struggle, really! And to think of the time we use putting on tons of lotion and moisturizers to keep our skin hydrated. The layers of clothes we have to consider putting on myself and my son. I don’t know if it’s because I was raised in a country (The Philippines) with no winter feeling at all, or it’s really a dreaded season by most people. My son and I got sick because I think our bodies are adjusting to the super dry and extremely cold season. But to be fair to this time of the year, I’ll write 2 things I like in winter: 1. the SNOW – last winter was our first time to experience snow and I admit it was FUN playing with my … Continue reading
